MV
makes comeback against SE Hawks 18-8
NOV 3 - The Vineyard's Matt Costello
scored twice, had a 70 INT return to seal the game, and racked up
a bunch of rushing yards along with Nick Gross in
a comeback win against Southeastern at McCarthy Field. Costello picked
up a TD running on the ground and through the air from Steve Handy, who also tossed another TD to Patrick
Hart. Coach Ryan Ruley's team gave up a
TD early and struggled to go to the halftime tailing 8-6. The 2nd
half was all purple and white however, the MVJV defense controlling
the Hawks the entire way. MV is now 4-1-2 and plays home again Friday
at 3:30 against Bristol-Plymouth.
Head JV Coach: Ryan Ruley (2nd year)
Assistants: Jason ODonnell, Mike Snowden, Phil Hughes, Tom Betsch
MV
tie Vikings, flag ends bid to win
With the score tied 14-14 with one minute
left in the 4th, Daron Stobie picked off a South Shore pass and returned
it to the 1-yard line where MV hoped to punch it in for the win. Unfortunately,
a personal foul was called on the return and the Vineyarders ran out
of time. The Purple subs return for a home game Friday at 3:30 at
McCarthy Field.
MV
Frosh battle CCT to 14-14 tie
OCT 23 - Some say a tie is like
kissing your sister, but to the freshman who had to step up and take
over for some missing sophs, the tie was a win when you are competing
against sophs and juniors. Great effort by the vaunted freshman -
who went undefeated and won the Cape Middle School League last year
- against a good opponent.
MV
gets defensive with Blue Hills 20-8
OCT 16 - After an apparently chippy,
unsportsmanlike report of the two varsities going at it on Friday,
this JV contest was played intensely, but very fair and respectively
of each other's efforts. The Vineyarder Subs scored early with two
quick long runs by Eric Dolliver and Matt
Costello, then put on a quality defensive performance that
the Warriors could not break, to take a 14-0 lead at halftime. While
Blue Hills put on a drive that earned them 8 in the 3rd, they were
shut down after that. The offense capped it off with a 2-yard dive
for 6 by team favorite Marcus Hopkins to win 20-8.
Dolliver is going to be a big factor in every game, but Costello's
rushing performance was inspiring. DJ Kaeka secured
the line with a good game from center. The win moves MV's record to
4-2.
Middleboro
outlasts MV JV 30-20
OCT 9th - In a hard but cleanly
fought game, the jayvees hung on tough, but fell to a large and talented
D2 Sachem squad. The purple and white were led in the first half by
a TD pass from Nick Billingham to Matt Costello
and looked to head into the locker room up 14-8 at the half, but a
well executed halfback option pass with seconds left gave MHS the
lead 16-8. In the 2nd half MV stayed close with a 60 yard kickoff
return by Nick Gross to cut the lead to 24-20. Two interceptions and
a late penalty hurt the Vineyarders and gave the Sachems a chance
to score and extend the lead. All in all, a well played game between
two quality opponents. MV is home again against Blue Hills next week.
WHITE
takes PURPLE in annual intraquad JV game
Eric Dolliver had an interception, a score, and a lot
of yards and tackles as Coach McCarthy's squad defeated Coach
Ruley's team 18-0 in a fun contest Friday night under the lights.
Nick Gross showed speed and tenacity out with two rushing TDs.
In general a hard played game. Zach Maciel was tough on D for
the Purple squad.
