Warriors JV outlast Vineyarders in excellent
contest
In a truly fun game to watch, Blue Hills Tech sub-varsity
team managed to outslug the MVJV offensively in a close game. It was
a mano-y-mano battle most of the time, with the squad having the ball
driving and scoring. MV managed one defensive stop and both PAT attempts
in the first half to have the halftime lead, 14-12, on scores by Taylor
Pierce and Tyler Hathaway.
In the 2nd, BH took off with a 70-yard TD on the kickoff but was stopped
again short of the 2-point try, 18-14. A solid offensive performance
continued as MV stormed right back to make it 22-18 on a short dive
and PAT 2 by Matt Lucier. In a well played and hard
fought game, BH kept grinding it downfield, aided on one key spot
by a 15-yard personal foul against the MV D. In the tight 4th quarter,
a crucial 4th and inches was at the MV 20. The BH tailback slipped
through the goalline defense, got behind the tight line and went for
the TD, 24-22.
An error on touching the kickoff ball moving out of bounds by Lucier
put the MV at their own 10 to begin another long drive. But the Vineyard
offense stalled on their last attempt to move at first by solid defensive
play against the run by the Warriors. Faced with 4th and 10 from their
own 10, MV went for it and it was knocked away on the long pass. Blue
Hills added another score and 2 keeping their starters in against
the MV 2nd string squad.
A closer game than the score indicated and well played on both sides
with a lot of passion and grit -- this is going to be a great rivalry
the next couple of years based on how these two teams went at it.

5: MV Junior Varsity 19, Cape Tech JV 0
In an early JV game, the MV subs dominated the
Crusaders, who used a JV squad for the first half, and a true freshman
squad in the 2nd. The Crusader frosh looked a little better, but still
had no success against a determined MV. Taylor Pierce,
Tyler Hathaway, and regular center Ryan Gorman
took one play at FB and scored on 4th and 1. Zack Coutinho added a
PAT kick. Gorman has been a standout all year as the snapper, and
his mates beside him did a great job against CCT.

7 - MVJV 36, Nauset Frosh 6
Nauset arrived with a true freshman
squad and happened to hit an MV JV squad (composed of 66% frosh,
who had an undefeated season as the Junior High squad in '03) who
were on their 'A' game both execution-wise and aggression-wise.
MV easily scored on it's first four possessions and walked off at
the end of the first quarter up 27-0. Alan Fortes
started the scoring off, followed with TDs by Taylor Pierce,
Matt Lucier's 65 yarder, and Tyler Hathaway.
Pierce added a deuce on a well executed "swinging gate",
and Zack Coutinho kicked two singles through. Pierce
and Coutinho put 7 more up in the 4th. The MV JV had some massive
hits throughout the game, and give the Nauset kids credit for a
lot of guts, toughness, tenacity, and a no-quit attitude. The NHS
frosh QB (we didn't have a roster) looked very impressive. The MV
sub-Vs move to 3-2 on the season.

2 - Somerset 20, MV 7
Somerset used players who had appeared in
Friday night's varsity game, as well as several juniors, against
a pure frosh-soph MV squad. The MV JV were banged up but responded
to the challenge. Freshmen Matt Lucier scored and
Zack Coutinho kicked the PAT for MV's 7. Talented
frosh Josh Paulsen went down with what appeared
to be a broken leg and had surgery that night. We're all hoping
for Josh's rapid recovery.

25 - MV 26, Greater Lowell 0
Steve
McCarthy's JVs looked strong again, coming back after a poor performance
last week to easily defeat the Greater Lowell sub-v's 26-0. Matt
Lucier, Josh Paulson, Nick Fogt, and Tom Neadow each scored
for MV, who move to 2-1 on the 2004 season. Next up is Somerset on
Friday October 1 at 4 p.m. in Somerset, MA.
