Nov 14: Middlers win 2nd CC Title in 3 years
Mattacheese Middle School (Dennis-Yarmouth) came to McCarthy Field tied with Martha's Vineyard at 5-0-1 for a last-game title game of the Cape Cod Middle School League, and the Vineyarders were able to take advantage of three MMS turnovers to prevail 14-8 and win the Cape Cod League title with an undefeated 6-0-1 record to return to the top just two years removed from 2003's champ squad. For Vineyard opponents, look out, the future looks bright.

MV took a coin toss defer to let MMS receive and immediately be stripped of an opening kickoff fumble and then take possession at the Mattacheese 15. Scant plays later, Eric Dolliver ran it in and included the rushing deuce PAT to give MV an early 8-0 lead.

MMS settled down and a defensive battle ensued until another 2nd quarter Mattacheese bobble gave MV a shot to surprise them long on a 40-yard scoring pass from QB Steve Handy to Josh Baker to go up 14-0 at the half.

In the 2nd half, it was grind it out defense on both sides. MV and Mattacheese were each stripped of balls to nullify good drives, and late in the 4th MMS made good on one late turnover, and while the MV prevent D didn't prevent - it slowed down the MMS offense and caused them to burn valuable time and time outs, and while MV gave up a TD and a PAT to close the gap to 14-8 - there remained only a minute and Mattacheese was out of TOs.

An unsuccessful onside kick gave the Vineyard the ball and two plays to wind out the clock. Between two great teams, the MVJH'rs prevailed to take the league title and utter the word they, too, weren't allowed to bring until the time became apparent: NANTUCKET!

Give credit to Mattacheese - some on their first trip to the island, where it always seems you show up a TD behind just because you aren't used to the trip the Vineyarders have learned to handle every other week. The future D-Yers didn't give up when behind big, and crawled back into the game late to make it close. And give credit to a scrappy, well-coached, and gentlemanly purple (and black pants - just the MS lower color) who have persevered and earned hopefully only one of their scholastic league titles.

Congrats to the new CCMSL champs and best in the ultimate game: against our brave, worthy friends and opponents we love and love to beat: the Whalers of Nantucket.
Nov. 9: MV Junior High 12, Nauset 8
Nauset 4-0-2 visited co-league leader 4-0-1 Martha's Vineyard at McCarthy Field for a contest that would determine the 2005 CCMSL champions. Both are quality teams that brought tough D to the forefront throughout the game. The junior Vineyarders opened the scoring in the 1st with a surprise lightning strike 40-yard TD pass from Steve Handy to Josh Baker to go ahead 6-0.
After an opening 2nd half kickoff fumble by MV at its own 15, Nauset ran it in to take the lead 8-6.
In the fourth, the MV D held a good rushing Nauset O back in their own territory, and took the ball back after a punt at the Nauset 35 with 3 minutes left. Some great flat passes led MV to 3rd and goal at the 11, when an unfortunate face mask penalty against Randall Jette gave MV a 1st down at the 6 with 30 seconds remaining.
On the next play, Eric Dolliver ran it in to give the MVJH squad the game, league lead, and an undefeated 5-0-1 record. A victory against Mattacheese Monday the 14th at MVRHS will seal the title with still the game against Nantucket to go.
Two good teams with excellent sportsmanship, a very fun game to witness, and well played by both squads.
Nov. 2: MV Junior High 12, Barnstable 0
(Barnstable, MA) MV JH continues winning ways defeat Barnstable 12-0.
The Junior Vineyarders improved to 4-0-1 with Erik Dolliver having another huge game - 2 TDs and 80+ yards rushing. Defense once again carried MV. Barnstable, with 71 kids and a huge team, did not get a single first down. Mark Nickawal had a big game on D with a sack, fumble recovery, and punt block. Troy Smalls, Kevin O'Donnell, DJ Kaeka, our tri-captain DL, all posted sacks and tackles for loss. CCMSL co-leader (with MV) Nauset visits on Wednesday 11/9, Mattacheese has been rescheduled for Monday the 14th.
Oct. 26: MV Junior High 24, Wixon 6
(Oak Bluffs) The MV Middlers keep their loss column spotless winning Wednesday at McCarthy Field against young Wixon, 24-6. After a rough opening, MV cruised in the 1st half with LB Eric Dolliver starting off the scoring by picking off a Wixon pass and returning it 25 yards for 6. Randall Jette also scored on an 11-yard run, and Dolliver scored again on a 14-yard rush. Jake Ferry added two 2-point PATs, Dolliver one to make it 24-0 at the half. In the 2nd, the Vineyard '2's (the young second string) got some great game experience, playing the entire half and giving up only one score. The MV JH improved to 3-0-1, sits tied for the CCMSL lead with Nauset, and plays next at Barnstable on Nov. 2nd. In a previous game with Barnstable, the young Vineyarders won, 14-6 at home. Game time next week is 3:30.
Oct. 19 - MV Jr. High MV 22, Falmouth 12
(Oak Bluffs) On Wednesday afternoon in neighboring Falmouth, the Clippers struck first on picking up an MVJH fumble and returning it for a quick 6. But after that, the MV Offensive line and defense played incredible. The D held Falmouth scoreless until 2:00 minutes to go, and the Junior League Vineyarders scored the next 22 points. Erik Dolliver scored on runs of 20& 15 yards. Josh Baker added two 2 pt conversions. Randell Jette added the final score and racked up over 100 yards rushing. The Vineyard record stands now at an impressive 2-0-1.
