Martha's
Vineyard wins 4th straight Cup in powerful fashion
The fan boat left at 7 with over 1700 Islanders aboard, and the crowd
on Nantucket had to be three times that and very spirited - and as
always the food was great. But the Vineyarders took the opening kickoff
and promptly fumbled the first handoff, as purple fans groaned about
past games started like this. But Bastille Lucier stripped Mark Dwyer
on the very next play to gain 20 yards. Not a bad exchange! From there
it was all Martha's Vineyard, putting on a power display against the
surprisingly large Whalers. MV looked faster, stronger, and better
conditioned both physically and mentally - and it showed in the 3rd
and 4th especially. After a key stop to end the 1st half inside the
Vineyard 1-yardline, the Whalers got the 2nd half kickoff and drove
the length of the field using 8 minutes of the 3rd quarter - only
to come up empty as the MV D wore them out and strung them out and
kept the blue from scoring. In the 4th it was ALL PURPLE & WHITE,
as the Whalers could only score once on the subs, who came in at 35-14.
D-Mab's 4th TD sealed it 47-22. Mike McCarthy and Alan Fortes each
scored once. Cape Cod Times report below. In other games:

MV keeps
firm grip on Island Cup By RUSS CHARPENTIER
STAFF WRITER - CAPE COD TIMES NANTUCKET - Four and counting for Martha's Vineyard.
The Vineyarders won the Island Cup for a fourth straight time yesterday,
bulldozing a game Nantucket squad 47-22 in the 60th meeting of the
island rivals before nearly 2,000 fans who enjoyed a brilliant afternoon
of warm sunshine and big-play football.
The Vineyard finishes the season 8-3 and Nantucket 6-5.
MV's 47 points are the most scored by either team in the series, which
Nantucket still leads 25-22-3. Since the inception of the Island Cup
in 1979, Nantucket enjoys a 16-12 edge.
For years, this was a Nantucket-dominated series. But as was evident
yesterday, the Whalers must play a near-perfect game to beat MV. The
Vineyard parlayed three first-half Nantucket turnovers into 21 points,
and that spelled the difference in a game that felt closer until the
final few minutes.
"Turnovers and stupid fouls killed us," said Nantucket coach Vito
Capizzo. "But I was proud of the way the kids hung in there."
The Whalers withstood MV's early 28-8 lead, and with less than two
minutes left in the first half had pulled it to 28-14 and had the
ball on their own 27.
Six plays later, Nantucket was at the MV 10 and though the clock showed
no time left, a roughing-the-passer penalty on the Vineyard gave the
Whalers one last shot. Quarterback Geddes Paulsen rolled right, saw
an open field and headed for the goal line. MV cornerback Terrell
Johnson closed quickly and knocked Paulsen out of bounds inside the
1, ending the half.
"That might very well have been the turning point," said Herman. "We
had a stupid penalty. They score there and maybe get a 2-point conversion,
now you're talking a whole different ball of wax there."
Paulsen finished 16-for-24 for 146 yards despite a strong rush.
"He showed a lot of poise," said Capizzo. "We had a lot of dropped
balls today, but it was hard-hitting out there and you have to expect
that. The good thing is all these receivers are underclassmen and
juniors."
Nantucket opened the second half with a 10-play drive that stalled
on a fourth-quarter incompletion at the MV 28. That came after a Paulsen
to Tomas Smaliorius 26-yard scoring pass was negated when it was ruled
Paulsen was over the line of scrimmage when he threw.
MV scored three times in the final quarter to Nantucket's one to create
the one-side score.
"Lots of fun," said MV senior captain and fullback Alan Fortes. "I
was planning it all along. I knew we were going to tear them up. I
think we were in the weight room more than they were."
The 5-8, 180-pound Fortes set the tone in the early going, gaining
56 of his 70 yards on the ground in the first half, including a 2-yard
TD for MV's first score. He did it all the hard way, running into
the middle of the line and carrying tacklers with him as he moved
the pile.
MV went on to rush for 296 yards, with Josh Paulson gaining 107 and
David Amabile 108 with four TDs, but it was Fortes who softened up
the Whalers.
"Smash-mouth football," said Herman. "And he'll be the first one to
tell you. The offensive line did a great job of stalemating their
defense and creating alleys for our running backs."
Fortes' TD was set up when senior DT Bastille Lucier stripped Nantucket's
Paulsen at midfield and recovered the ball. An errant pitch on Nantucket's
next series set the Vineyard up at the Whalers' 40, and five plays
later Amabile ran it in from the 5 for the first of his four TDs.
Nantucket got on the board with 3:09 left in the first quarter on
a 13-yard Paulsen to Delroy Lawrence scoring pass. Lawrence, an athletic
6-4, 210-pound sophomore, had six catches for 67 yards, all in the
first half.
Amabile scored from 19 yards out on the first play of the second quarter,
and Matt Lucier hauled in a 19-yard TD pass from sophomore QB Mike
McCarthy to make it 28-8. Nantucket senior fullback John O'Mara (13
carries, 74 yards) scored from the 1 with 5:51 to go in the first
half to make it 28-14.
After MV thwarted the Whalers' comeback, Amabile scored on a 9-yard
run early in the fourth quarter for a 35-14 lead. McCarthy ran it
in from the 3 to make it 41-14. After O'Mara's second TD, a 1-yard
plunge, Amabile added a 46-yard scamper as MV was trying to run out
the clock.

Vineyarders
seek unprecedented 4th straight Cup
The Whalers have improved. They have won
four straight. They almost won the Maylower Small title. They have
confidence, size, the Vito at home factor, and a new desire to complete
a comeback season: upset the Grapes. It's a big deal for them:
Save the win - save the pride - savor the Cup.
BUT The Vineyarders are a powerful team, also with three straight
wins against tougher opponents, and 4 of the last 5 against good
Mayflower Large teams. Can the class of 2007 do something no MV
class has ever done before - win the Island Cup for four straight
seasons? History says that's a tall order - especially on Nantucket,
where weird things happen.
This much is true: when the first shoe touches the pigskin at 1
o'clock Saturday, all bets are off, all records are moot, past history
is nothing, it's the Vineyard against Nantucket. If you like sports,
if you like football, if you like rivalries - this is on the pinnacle.
Featured in the past in Life Magazine, USA Today, NBC Sports, and
every Boston station, it's a classic battle of discipline, will,
and gotta wanna. We can't wait! High school football at
its best, the weather looks splendid, and the boat is ready.

Zach Coutinho is consistent and accurate

Vineyarders
beat Craftsmen w/ Specials, despite the flags
November 10, Oak Bluffs -
Martha's Vineyard came out hard against a tough and determined 7-1
Bristol-Plymouth team. There never has been any love lost between
these two opponents, and tonight was no different. It started with
a personal foul against MV for a hit into the B-P sideline that
gave the Craftsmen the opening yards of a long drive straight down
the field - a portent of things to come on this long evening. But
at the end of the first quarter, the MV D held and allowed them
to nada at the 15 in a great show of defense.
Then the Purple took over with a key forced fumble at the B-P 30
in the 2nd, and eventually MV QB Mike McCarthy
broke the plane first with a 4-yard keeper to put MV up 6-0 at the
half.
In the 3rd, the Vineyard special teams roared the crowd. Josh
Paulsen took the opening kick 76 yards down inside the
B-P red zone, with Tyler Hathaway scoring from
8 yards out and Zach Coutinho adding the PAT to
make it 14-0. On the next drive MV stuffed the Craftsmen, forcing
them to punt. There the rush blocked the punt, with Bastille
Lucier catching it over his shoulder and rumbling 16 yards,
tackled at the 15. Paulson then used excellent speed to score from
13 out, Coutinho added another and MV was in control 20-0.
B-P then made some great defensive adjustments, going to the 5-3
defense, and both teams couldn't get much O going. Matt
Lucier became a great defense with his foot: he boomed
some amazing clutch, deep punts to keep B-P in their own end.
It was about midway through the 4th when the B-P visiting side seemed
to swell with many rowdy fans right on the edge of play, Nantucket
coaches and players, and the B-P squad, frustrated and chippy. Twice
play had to be halted as players started to get nasty with each
other and flags were littering the green field. At one point there
were more flags down than officials (each official carries two).
A weak interferance call on a stop of a B-P 4th down pass (both
appeared to be going for the ball, but often a team behind will
get that call to make the game interesting), gave B-P a chance to
score and they did to cut the deficit to 20-6.
It was clear the B-P squad were attempting to incite emotions. When
David Amabile made a key fourth down stop late
in the 4th into the B-P bench, his helmet was ripped from his head,
and two MV players dove in to assist him. That was worth four personals
on one play. (One against the B-P bench, one against Amabile for
having his helmet off on the field, and two for the MV players jumping
in.)
Now the referee had to stop play, figure out the penalty walk offs,
and have a conference at midfield with both coaches.
While that was being figured out, MV Coach Mike McCarthy
and his colleagues came up with a solution for the 5-3, and they
ran for two key first downs and ran out the clock.
No handshakes were made, and the teams were kept separated for the
obvious reasons, but the Vineyard had proven a point: they were
the better football team, and were left to consider if they had
performed in the fashion of the last three games the same way on
a crucial night against Cape Tech, things would have been different
in the Mayflower Large. In fact, if not for an untimely block in
the back penalty, MV may well have been putting the finish on a
league title. But, as they say, what couldda happened, did. Not
this year: Cape Tech pounded South Shore 35-0 to grab the league
and the playoff spot.
